Severstal Steel Towers resumes production of wind turbine towers
Severstal Steel Towers has resumed production of wind turbine towers (WTT), manufacturing 74 sets in 2025. The company also won a tender for a four-year supply of steel towers, under which it plans to deliver more than 250 units to Russia’s largest power company by the end of 2029.
In 2025, Severstal Steel Towers operated at full production capacity and mastered new technologies that enable the manufacture of next-generation towers. The plant successfully launched production of the largest towers in its range, reaching a height of 120 metres, a diameter of 5.3 metres and a weight of over 400 tonnes.
The steel towers are made from steel plates of grade S355NL with a thickness of up to 69 mm, produced at Severstal’s Kolpino site with the involvement of partner processors. This steel grade is subject to enhanced quality requirements to ensure the towers’ resistance to temperature fluctuations.
Severstal Steel Towers has completed the modernization of its production facilities by purchasing a reach stacker with a lifting capacity of 75 tonnes. Together with the existing reach stacker, the new equipment makes it possible to move wind turbine tower sections with a total weight of up to 120 tonnes. Unlike a mobile crane, the reach stacker can not only lift heavy structures but also transport them over considerable distances and manoeuvre inside the plant territory.
“The resumption of wind turbine tower production at Severstal Steel Towers and the tender victory confirm Severstal’s readiness to participate in large-scale projects in Russia’s wind energy sector. The company managed to preserve its production team and technical expertise in the manufacture of steel towers for wind turbines. Success in mastering new technologies strengthens the company’s position and expands its production capabilities,” noted Severstal CEO Alexander Shevelev.
Currently, more than 200 people work at Severstal Steel Towers, and active recruitment and training of employees continues. Having become part of a major metallurgical company, Severstal Steel Towers has already implemented many effective HR practices, including in-person and distance learning for specialists to improve their qualifications.
